Landing page optimization is important. It’s about presenting your best “first impression” to respondents who click on your PPC search ads, email links, affiliate promotions, banner ads, etc.

The goal is to achieve the highest conversion rate and the highest ROI. That’s a big goal. It’s the goal that the CMO cares about — is our online marketing paying off? Ultimately, it’s the goal that the CEO cares about. Businesses and careers rise or fall on the outcome.

But if that’s such a big goal, why do most of the discussions around landing page optimization start and end way down in the weeds? Sure, any one landing page is a very tactical initiative on the front-line. But those tactics aren’t executed in a vacuum. They’re enabled (or constrained):

* by the broader initiatives under which they live;
* by your organizational capabilities;
* and by your overarching strategy.

And just as these front-line tactics are directed by the higher-level strategy, they should also inform that strategy with useful intelligence and marketing learning from the battlefield. Great online marketing is a feedback loop, a virtuous cycle.

To optimize that overall mission, you need to view landing page marketing at multiple levels:

Traditional Landing Page Optimization

1. Element optimization. For any given element on a page — for instance, the headline — you can test to find the best version. This is the lowest level of landing page optimization. It’s important in the context of a particular page, but in the big scheme of things, it delivers the least overall value.

2. Page optimization. This is what is usually meant by “landing page optimization”. It’s about finding the the right combination of elements — each of which gets optimized — as well as the best layout and design of the overall page. This can have a significant impact on the performance of a specific page, and if you do this across all of your online marketing, it can contribute a noticeable bump to marketing’s overall results.

Enlightened Landing Page Optimization

3. Path optimization. However, a page is merely a single step along a path — one that starts with the ad or email that the respondent clicked on and carries through to the second and third pages the user clicks on and beyond. Optimizing the path is about message match and expectation management to make the prospect’s overall experience the best it can be. Optimizing at this level lets you leap ahead of competitors who are stuck in the disconnected underbrush of individual pages.

4. Segment optimization. But all clicks are not equal. Different respondents arrive with different needs and varying frames of reference. At this next level up, you start optimizing different paths to cater to those different audiences. At this optimization, you can reveal tremendous insights about who your customers are and how they view themselves and their interest in your company. These discoveries not only improve your conversion rate for specific paths — they can help optimize your segmentation strategy at a higher level too. Big dividends.

5. Campaign optimization. Even as “campaigns” are giving way to a more fluid marketing environment, there are still different initiatives in the field that connect certain messages, offers, audiences, and tactics with common threads. At the campaign level, landing page optimization becomes about matching the right pages and paths with the right slices of the campaign, and using the front-line results to inform and improve overall campaign effectiveness. It requires coordination and continuity. Even in large enterprises, this is where the outcomes are now visible to senior management.

Strategic Landing Page Optimization

6. Operations optimization. At this level, landing page optimization is about maximizing the efficiency of your overall landing page capabilities. How good is your landing page management for producing, organizing, and optimizing landing pages across all your different campaigns? This is about increasing your cycle speed and reducing your per-page and per-path overhead. The more optimized you can make your landing page management processes, the more optimization you can execute at the tactical levels below.

7. Strategy optimization. At the very top of the pyramid, the focus is on optimizing the big picture marketing strategy. At this level, landing page optimization becomes abstracted from the gory details, but it makes two very important contributions: (1) the option to execute highly segmented strategies and (2) the ability to quickly test strategic assumptions in micro-campaigns and to use that learning to optimize the overall strategy.

The difference between this more strategic landing page optimization and traditional landing page optimization can mean the difference between myopia (i.e., optimizing the deck chairs on the Titanic) and visionary marketing leadership.

Landing page optimization in the big picture isn’t just important. It’s very important.

Here are five of the tips that caught our eye…

1. Get robotic help

Robots.txt is a plain text file found at the root of a server. This tells search bots which content needs to be allowed or disallowed when it visits their website. If your Flash text content is the same as your HTML version, you could set the Robots.txt file to ignore the SWF content and push only the HTML content to the search bots.

2. Add SWF content to the HTML source

An iron-clad way to guarantee that a SWF’s content is picked up and ranked by search engines is to extract the content and place it into the page’s HTML source. Tools such as Dreamweaver use SWFObject to embed Flash. The code view in Dreamweaver displays comments where you should add your alternative HTML content.

3. Add text to your Flash applications

A simple Flash SEO enhancement is to use Flash-generated text in your creative when displaying or animating type. You can do this instead of using text that’s a flattened bitmap.

Marketers must priorities search engine optimization (SEO) over paid search as more clicks are made on organic results than sponsored listings, according to discussion between experts from Wikipedia, Hitwise and Sagital Media on the future of search engine marketing.

The group noted that 32.4 per cent of all visits to websites are made from search engines, with 95 per cent of these clicks coming from organic results as opposed to pay-per-click ads.

This means that SEO should be a much higher priority than just buying the right AdWords.

Upcoming search trends discussed by the group included real-time search – such as that offered by social networking site Twitter – and non-text search, both of which marketers should keep an eye on, the experts said.

US spending on SEO is likely to overtake that on contextual ads by 2013, according to a recent forecast from Marketer.

As shoppers sought out bargains on the web, online retail sales increased, according to the latest figures.

It shows that sales were up by 19 per cent in March compared to the same month last year, while month-on-month sales rose by nine per cent.

Mother’s Day provided a boost for online retailers, with sales of gifts up 18 per cent in March compared to February.

Search engine marketing and pay per click campaigns advertising Mother’s Day items, money off promotions and other offers may have attracted shoppers.

“Online is proving to be a key battle ground for the retail sector during these tough times.”

Research carried out recently shows that online retail sites accounted for 8.6 per cent of all UK web visits last month.

This was down slightly from 9.7 per cent in March 2008.

Google AdWords has slowly been rolling out and expanding the beta version of their new interface. Now with the beta interface is coming a new way to view conversions.

Currently, the AdWords interface only shows 1-per-click conversions. In other words, if a customer clicks on your ad and makes a purchase one day, then returns another day without clicking on the ad, only one conversion is counted. In coming months, the new interface will offer two ways to look at such conversions:

* “Conversions” columns are now labeled Conversions (1-per-click)
* “Transactions” columns are now called Conversions (many-per-click)

The many per click can count that next sale that doesn’t come through the ad. It can also count a non-sale conversion such as a newsletter signup.

The new interface isn’t the only AdWords tool getting the new conversion metric definitions. Over time, AdWords Editor and the AdWords API will get the metrics as well.

Internet marketing is likely to perform well this year in comparison to other forms of media, which suffered in May during the recession.

According to the latest survey on trends in marketing of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, one in ten are optimistic that the commercialization of the British economy will accelerate during the next 12 months.

Seven out of ten said they thought economic conditions deteriorate during the coming year.

The coming months will be difficult for all those involved in advertising, but he insisted that, in part because of his “accountability and measurability,” the Web will rise to economic difficulties.

“People are sending more time online, especially during the week but on weekends. Media consumption is changing, and it is also, of course, driving ad dollars. “

In trying to bring traffic to a site of many factors play the role, but the search engine optimization (SEO) experts say the usability of a site and its referencing should work hand in hand.

Search for those who make sure that a website can be used also need to consider that the search engine optimization (SEO) tools such as key words are important too.

Usability professionals often remove keywords from sites, presumably to make the site more user friendly. But in doing so they actually have the opposite effect.

When visitors click on a link from a search engine results page (SERP) of a website, they expect to find keywords on the page. And content of the web page should appear somewhat focused on these keywords. Otherwise? Then, visitors to rebound from web page.

Usability Professionals also sometimes complain of the lack of traffic to a site after the removal of keywords, but without these key terms, they make the site more difficult to find.

A study last month found that most companies do not include search engine optimization (SEO), with more than half of the stuffing to say key words is an effective strategy.

A number of search engine optimization and Internet Marketing experts concluded in recent weeks that a change from Google gave brands more favorable rankings in search. In a message uploaded on YouTube on Wednesday, Cutts acknowledged that tweaks had been made which would affect results.

the search engine optimization community suggested that Google had changed its algorithms to increase the results of brands, but this week Google’s Matt Cutts downplayed the importance of branding in search.

For companies looking to increase their search results and search engine optimization (SEO), Cutts said the techniques that worked two months ago, before the change, should still be effective.

“What you should be doing doesn’t change – try to make a great site, try to make a site that is so fantastic that you become known as an authority in your niche … those are the sort of sites – the experts – that we want to bring back,” he added.
